It can be hard to quit while you’re ahead. When you’re having a much easier day, the urge to get everything done while you can physically and cognitively do it, the temptation to just keep going is so strong.
If you’re anything like me, your sense of worth might have been linked to your level of productivity for a long time. Trying to move away from that notion is challenging. I have to weigh things up constantly and sometimes, when that has become too tiresome, I will throw caution to the wind and do Y even though I’ve already done X. Who can blame me!
I was lucky though, to be scooped up by people who had had M.E. for years when I first joined the online community. Not only did they save me from Graded Exercise Therapy, but also instilled in me that “doing 50% of what you feel able to do” is a good thing to strive for.
In a society that laughs in the face of rest and slower living, that is hard. But I give it a go, albeit with very mixed success.
The To Do list never gets done but adding ‘Rest’ or ‘Stop Before You Crash’ as tasks to tick off helps to cross a couple of things off the ever growing list!
